Anna Karenina
Gram

Anna gram > anagram

Loaning web is an anagram of Liang Wenbo. Got to applaud that one. It was quite simple, staring us in the face in fact. But we were all looking at it the wrong way!

Re: 2 Word Clue

And I like the red herring about capitals. I’m sure the majority of us were thinking in terms of capital cities. But it’s simply his initials, LW.

Re: 2 Word Clue

Postby LDS

Yes! That's the one.

I knew as soon as someone realised it was an anagram it would be solved in, like, 2 seconds. As each hour went by I wondered if anyone was ever going to think of even doing that <laugh>

Re: 2 Word Clue

Back soon with a new one <ok>

Boss Husker

Re: 2 Word Clue

Postby chengdufan

Brandon Sargeant?

Re: 2 Word Clue

Postby chengdufan

Or hang on, Ray Reardon

Husker - Corn - EAR
Boss - DON

Re: 2 Word Clue

Postby Prop

Not Brandon Sargeant or Ray Reardon.

You should look a bit deeper into Husker. You probably weren’t a million miles away from getting the right word from that.

Google is definitely useful for this one.

Re: 2 Word Clue

A clue. Think in terms of nicknames.

Re: 2 Word Clue

Dave Gilbert?

No, sorry. What’s your logic?

Angry Farmer
Bosses are stereotypically angry.
A husker would likely be a farmer.

Re: 2 Word Clue

Postby Prop

Yeah, not really that close.

Again, think nicknames.

I know that googling Husker immediately reveals a word that will take you one step closer to the answer.

And who has Boss for a nickname :chin:

Bit harsh, the Angry Farmer wasn't that bad of a guess!

I think I'm missing something obvious.
Googling Husker gives me three pages of links to University of Nebraska sports sites, with one link to a Prop like clue of Husker Du, a band, midway down page 2.
Neither has got me very far.

The Boss is Tony Drago, but there seems to be no link between him and Husker that I can spot.

Getting better!

Yes, you’re missing the obvious Boss. Think outside snooker.

Regarding Husker, you just mentioned the correct word in your first paragraph.

Once you have the two correct words, a bit of googling and knowledge of current events will land you at the right player.

I feel like I’ve just made it quite easy!

Damn, it's Judd Trump

Correct! :D

The Boss is of course Bruce Springsteen, and a Husker is slang for a native of Nebraska.

Springsteen had an album called Nebraska, one of its tracks being Atlantic City.

Put Atlantic City in the context of snooker, and our own Judd Trump is playing there in the US Open pool next week.

This is one of the best 2 word clues we've had, in my opinion. Good stuff Prop!

If only a fan of Bruce Springsteen had had a go at it, it would have been solved much more quickly :-)

I think this is a very difficult one, but we shall see...

Chianti Broadway

Re: 2 Word Clue

Ok, a quick stab. Tony Knowles, or Tony Meo.

Re: 2 Word Clue

Or it could be a John… :chin:

Or Tony Drago? Tony because of Broadway and Drago because of Red Dragon

Multiple avenues with this one.

I assume we’re on the same page with Tony? Chianti > Silence of the Lambs > ‘Tony’ Hopkins.

Broadway could be George Benson. So whichever of Knowles and Meo did ok at the Benson & Hedges Masters, perhaps. And I’m sure B&H sponsored a smaller tournament. Might be imagining that!

Just thinking out loud for now :-)

Edit - of course we’re on the same page. Red Dragon!

Re: 2 Word Clue

Postby Prop

For what it’s worth, I was thinking it could be a John because of Hopkins - Johns Hopkins University.

Re: 2 Word Clue

Postby Iranu

I figured Tony was a reference to the Tony awards and Broadway plays!

Re: 2 Word Clue

Some good progress here, definitely looking in the right direction. No correct guesses yet though :-)

Anthony Hamilton?
