Ranking event final involving 2 unlikely surprising players. 1 of them was a 1 time ranking event winner at the time. The opponent who was the underdog clinched the title.

One of the players involved in the final won his 2nd ranking title earlier this year.

After winning a major event when many were saying he was in decline, this player won a 2nd ranking event title in sucession, beating a fellow countryman in the Final.

1989 Mercantile Credit Classic Final

About six weeks after he’d beaten Stephen Hendry 16-12 to lift the Tennents UK Title.

Could that be John Parrott? The year he played Steve Davis in the 1st round at the Crucible; went to a decider. Can’t remember the year though, it was the noughties… maybe ‘05 :chin:

Ah, and now I’m reading it again, former champ recovered from 3-6 to win his final qualifier, not Crucible match, so the qualifier is the match in question, is that right?
