A great Crucible rivalry is revived in less illustrious surroundings; sadly, despite much hype, it will be remembered as something of a damp squib

This match became this player's last ever match at The Crucible, and the player who inflicted his defeat is already retired.

World class player in a final but way past his prime and not won a title for a long time. He's up against a young upcoming star.
The young player wins the final.

Major final. The more decorated player (by a long way) loses to the other, also a world champion, for the secons time in a Triple Crown final.

SnookerEd has it.
Apologies that the question was slightly wrong - it was the second latest finish *at the time*, after Thorburn's epic against Griffiths in the previous round finished at 3:51 am (apparently the final session of that match lasted 6 hrs 25 mins). The match versus Stevens finished at 2:15 am (the final session lasted 6 hrs 11 mins).
The match was displaced as second latest finish in 1989 when Charlton and Thorburn battled until 2:40 am in the first round.

Popular crowd favourite becomes the first from his country to get to a Ranking Event final, beating the defending champion along the way, but is annihilated by the reigning World Champion on the last day.
