Of course, it is a Beatles original. But I'm looking for the Scottish band that took it to no. 1 in 1968.

Do we think if a song on the album is a cover that should be specified?

I was sort of attempting to do this implicitly by saying at the outset that all the artists were Scottish, which the Beatles obviously aren't. But maybe this was a bit of a cack-handed way of doing it.

It certainly was! I actually expected this to be the first one to go, despite it being from thirty-odd years ago. It still gets quite a lot of radio play and the band are very much still around.

Your lead now is almost unassailable.

No, that's wrong, I was thinking of "you've Got The Love" and it wasn't by desiree either, I've just forgotten her name.

You Got The Love was originally by The Source, featuring Candi Staton, late 80s. It’s been remixed and covered umpteen times. Florence and the Machine absolutely ruined it. I think Joss Stone did a cover. My favourite version is the New Voyager remix by The Source (the one with strings rather than arpeggio synth of the original mix).

The original mix was IIRC used in Layer Cake, the nightclub scene featuring a smoking (and smoking hot) Sienna Miller.

I'm afraid not. Snap did release "The Power", of course, so I can see where you're coming from.

No, number 3 is far more difficult than that. It's the only obscure one though. Amazed nobody's got number five yet.

[edit] Right on cue, Iranu gets number 5 and confirms the win for Happycamper.

Just number 3 to go.

1. Shang-A-Lang - Bay City Rollers (Happycamper)
2. Real Gone Kid - Deacon Blue (Happycamper)
3. You've Got The Power
4. A Girl Like You - Edwyn Collins (Prop)
5. Darts of Pleasure - Franz Ferdinand (Iranu)
6. Boom Bang-A-Bang - Lulu (Happycamper)
7. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da - Marmalade (Krazeeeyezkilla)
8. Mr. Rock & Roll - Amy MacDonald (Happycamper)
9. Black Horse and the Cherry Tree - KT Tunstall (Happycamper)
10. Mary's Prayer - Danny Wilson (Krazeeeyezkilla)

The missing answer ("You've Got The Power") was used in a McEwans lager advert in the late 1980s. Set in what seemed to be a dystopian future, people were rolling giant stone balls around for...some reason or other. If you were watching TV in 1987 or 1988, I guarantee that you will have seen this advert.

Re: The Greatest Hits Quiz!

Postby James Bentley

If you're not going to get it from that, you're not going to get it. I don't see any reason to prolong this, especially as Happycamper has already won this round.

The answer is Win. This was a group formed by Davy Henderson after the demise of The Fire Engines, who were incredibly influential in the very early 1980s, especially on the microcosmic Scottish indie scene; everyone references them. Win released a couple of great albums but split in the early 90s. Davy Henderson went on to form the Nectarine No. 9, amongst other outfits. He's a tremendous talent who has never got the commercial success that he deserves.

Anyway, over to Happycamper!

To complete proceedings, final results:

1. Shang-A-Lang - Bay City Rollers (Happycamper)
2. Real Gone Kid - Deacon Blue (Happycamper)
3. You've Got The Power - Win (-)
4. A Girl Like You - Edwyn Collins (Prop)
5. Darts of Pleasure - Franz Ferdinand (Iranu)
6. Boom Bang-A-Bang - Lulu (Happycamper)
7. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da - Marmalade (Krazeeeyezkilla)
8. Mr. Rock & Roll - Amy MacDonald (Happycamper)
9. Black Horse and the Cherry Tree - KT Tunstall (Happycamper)
10. Mary's Prayer - Danny Wilson (Krazeeeyezkilla)

Havana is quite recent. It's something like Camila Cabrero, but that might be totally mangled and I'm quite prepared to have it discounted for being too far off the actual name.
