Nope, Runaway was by a solo artist but it is from that era. And Sly And The Family Stone (probably my favourite ever band) is indeed right for Dance To The Music.

No. 9 is from 1988, so not long before!

I’d just be picking random artists at this point, so I might have to sit tight until further hints are revealed...

All correct, but Happycamper already got Sly.

No, but it is an American band. A funk band. They were very active in the 1970s and came back to have a UK number one single in 1984.

Not someone like Earth Wind and Fire?

Not quite like Earth Wind and Fire, although their early stuff was in the same ballpark. More poppy.

The band behind No. 4 were named after a steam-powered dildo featured in William Burroughs's "Naked Lunch".

Other well-known airplay favourites from no. 4 are "Do It Again" and "Reelin' In The Years". No. 5 also did "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty" (as featured on The Simpsons repeatedly) and the original of "Please Don't Go".

That's correct for no. 5. Just no. 4 to go. I don't think they're obscure, you'll probably know more songs by them than you realise.

Iranu wrote:Kool and the Gang?

Nope. Not really a soul or funk band. Less straightforward. If anything, I would kind of describe them as an American version of 10cc. Same sort of cynicism and knowingness in the lyrics. One of their integral members died last year.

4-4 between Happycamper and Krazeeeyekilla at the moment. Trying to think of a giveaway clue to settle it.
