Re: The Greatest Hits Quiz!

Postby LDS

As is per tradition, I've rifled through my parent's old singles collection and will try to present the results in some kind of difficulty order. However, this time I've selected the most famous and well known songs I could find, so the first half should all be about as easy as each other.

1. Tears
(spent 5 weeks at no.1 in 1965 & is one of the best selling records of all time in the uk)
2. How Do You Do It
(3 weeks at no.1 in 1963)
3. Stupid Cupid
(6 weeks at no.1 in 1958)
4. Can't Help Falling In Love
(4 weeks at no.1 in 1962)
5. That'll Be The Day
(3 weeks at no.1 in 1957)
6. Bachelor Boy
(3 weeks at no.1 in 1962)
7. Singing The Blues
(1 week at no.1 in 1957)
8. Wonderboy
(peaked around no.30ish in 1968)
9. Multiplication
(a No.5 hit from 1961)
10. You're a Pink Toothbrush
(a novelty song from 1959)

First in should get some big scores.

I'll probably allow it, but it was his band that is the title on the record, of which he was a member. Can you remember the name of the band?

The Crickets

If that's how it's going to be, 6 will be cliff Richard, the shadows, or some combination of the two.

Obviously not a fan of a certain football club.

No allegiance to any Football club any more. Used to follow my local non-league side, but when they folded that was it when it came to supporting someone. Never followed a League club.

Gerry and the pacemakers, not a song to sing if you can't pronounce the letter D.

Clues for the remainders:

7 - He was the UK's first rock'n'roll star, had a UK no.1 before even Elvis did, this song being it, and his only one, but was henceforth a regular top 10/20 fixture right up until early 1960. Ladies of a certain age will still melt at the thought of him.

8. You know this band very well, but this single was rushed out the door with literally zero planning and hype, much to the band's dismay. The critics loved it, it's still loved today, but it's hard to buy something you don't know exists. This UK band had regular top 10/20s from 1964-1972 on both sides of the Atlantic.

9. This American heartthrob had is first big hit in 1958 with Splish Splash, a no.3 in the US and a no.18 in the UK. He remained in the public eye in the US until about '66, but had faded from UK stardom by the end of 1962. A bit of an all-rounder, you might recognise his name from song writing credits, jazz, pop, rock'nroll, folk, swing, country music, award winning acting in movies, promoting Robert Kennedy in 1968.

Which just leaves Wonderboy. Which is very difficult to give clues for as they of such fame that most clues will give it away far too easily. Hmm.

I think everyone should just punt on extremely famous 60s UK bands.
