Just guess, Potentially 10 different commentators so shouldn't be too tricky.

Can I post a question then?
I can’t cope with the pressure on ‘Who Said That?’

Something was missing from the World Championship in the following years :
2002, 2011, 2016, 2017, 2018, & 2020
What was it?

Firstly I would say ‘focus on the draw(s)’
Secondly, I would say I don’t mind a bit of Internet research being undertaken as it will take a bit of solving…

This isn’t the answer I’m looking for, though it may be true - about to start work so haven’t time to check comprehensively

A further clue :
This is a sequence that began with the first staging of the WC in 1977. With Fred.

Correct
Fred opened the sequence in 77 & 78, Steve debuted in 79 and, along with the occasional appearance from Fred, carried the Davis mantle through to 2002 when he failed to qualify, leaving the tournament ‘Davisless’ for the first time (though there was a Davies in the draw - Anthony). Since then, apart from the years stated, Steve and Mark have kept the Davis name alive at the Crucible.
Nice one Iranu
and be quick with your question, lest you raise the ire of Judders

Not Bingham or Ebdon.
To narrow guesses down a bit and avoid a boring list of guesses, it happened in 2004 and the player is no longer on tour.
