The nickname has nothing to do with the country of Scotland itself.
It's from a series of action films from the 80s and 90s called 'The Highlander' where the main protagonist is also called Mcleod.

I actually knew that Cloud, (the first movie is alright haven't seen any others) just thought he would have needed substantial Scottish heritage as well as sharing a surname with a fictional character, to warrant that nickname

I wasn't aware of the character's name. However, it seems ridiculous still. I cannot imagine Rory McLeod would have suggested it. Black people take their name from their slave owners. Well at least those of Caribbean descent.
It seems like another case of micro aggression.
