I couldn't agree more. Not only that, but Ding was in the very bottom group of seeds, starting out in the last 96, despite having won 2 of the last 4 ranking events. Crazy!

Ronnie decided not to play in this one.

2005/2006 was a very disappointing season for Hendry not winning anything. That 1st round match to Bond in the World championship was so irritating! Sadly Hendry wouldn't win anything again.

Mark Williams had a sudden return to form just before the World Championships. He won this year's China Open, beating John Higgins 9-8 in the final. It was the second time in three ranking events that John Higgins lost the decider in the final, following his 9-8 loss to Doherty earlier in the season.

There were 8 wild cards in this year's event, as opposed to 16 in the previous year. And this year they were all Chinese. We saw the likes of YuDelu, Li Hang and Tian Pengfei for the first time, with Yu Delu winning his wild card match 5-1 against Andrew Norman.

Ronnie O'Sullivan lost 5-0 to James Wattana in the opening round.

At the start of the Hunter-Robertson match the camera shows Hunter up close who looks exhausted. I'm amazed he was able to win five frames. With an easier opponent he might have made the second round.

This tournament was the end of Jimmy White as a top player. For many years it seemed like the end for Alan McManus too.

Now this was quite an interesting one, with a new format tried out. The players ranked 33-96 were put into 8 groups of 8. The 16 players who finished in the top 2 places in their groups qualified to join the top 32 in another group stage.
The second group stage consisted of 8 groups of 6.
The top two players from each group progressed to the last 16, and the tournament then proceeded as a regular knock-out.
This meant there were a whopping 1,452 frames played in 350 matches.

Neil Robertson came through it all to claim his first ranking title. He beat Jamie Cope in the final, who was also reaching that stage for the first time. In a low-scoring match, it was an easy win for the Thunder. He led 8-2, and eventually won 9-5.

QFs:
Alan McManus (40) 5-3 Ian McCulloch (20)
