2017 Paul Hunter Classic - Stadthalle, Fürth
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Paul_Hunter_Classic

Despite not making a century break in the whole competition, Michael White beat Mark Selby and later Shaun Murphy in the final to claim his second ranking title.

It was a low-scoring tournament generally, with only Mark Joyce, Jamie Jones, Gary Wilson, Ben Woollaston and Barry Pinches making more than one century break. This was perhaps mainly due to the vast majority of the top professionals not entering. 19 of the top 32 did not take part, and from the top 16, only Selby, Murphy, Bingham and Kyren Wilson played.

The opportunity was there for some of the lower-ranked players to gain some valuable prize money and ranking points, and Mitchell Mann took most advantage, reaching the semi-finals. To do so, he got past 3 amateur players, Daniel Wells and Mark Joyce, and was rewarded with 4,500GBP

QFs
Jamie Jones (40) 4-2 Gary Wilson (66)
Shaun Murphy (7) 4-2 Ben Woollaston (32)

Selby didn't have the toughest of runs to the final, though he did beat Mark Williams. Mark Allen's only top 16 opponent en route to the final was Judd Trump.

Ronnie O'Sullivan blew away the field to become the second player to reach 30 ranking titles. He lost only 9 frames in his 7 matches, and it's worth looking at his whole tournament:
L128 5-0 Chris Keogan
L64 5-2 Gary Wilson
L32 5-1 Joe Perry
L16 5-0 Barry Hawkins
QF 5-1 Mark Williams
SF 6-2 John Higgins
F 10-3 Judd Trump
Impressive stuff, especially in the final considering Judd himself had won 20 consecutive frames earlier in the tournament, losing only 5 frames on his way to the final.
The Rocket took a 7-0 lead in the final.

Somewhat lost in the mix, Jack Lisowski reached the semi-final for the first time, beating Mark Allen amongst others.

QFs
Jack Lisowski (33) 5-3 Kurt Maflin (47)
Judd Trump (2) 5-0 Luca Brecel (15)
John Higgins (4) 5-1 Martin Gould (20)
Ronnie O'Sullivan (5) 5-1 Mark Williams (10)

SFs
Trump (2) 6-3 Lisowski (33)
O'Sullivan (5) 6-2 Higgins (4)

Final
O'Sullivan (5) 10-3 Trump (2)

2017 Northern Ireland Open - Waterfront Hall, Belfast
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Nort ... eland_Open

Mark Williams won his 19th ranking title. It was his first since the 2011 German Masters. He beat 17 year-old Yan Bingtao in the final, the youngest player ever to reach a ranking final.
Yan was ahead or level throughout the match, including taking a 6-3 lead. Williams moved in front at the vital moment though, winning the deciding frame.
It was a relatively trouble-free run to the final for both players. Yan's highest-ranked opponent was Ryan Day, while Williams' was David Gilbert.

We had two surprise semi-finalists in Elliott Slessor and Lyu Haotian, both reaching that stage for the first time. Slessor beat O'Sullivan in last 32. Lyu's best result was beating Kurt Maflin.

Selby and Ding did not play. The highest ranked players, Trump and Higgins, lost to Carrington (L128) and Gary Wilson (L32) respectively.

QFs
Yan Bingtao (22) 5-4 Robert Milkins (37)
Lyu Haotian (125) 5-4 Tian Pengfei (73)
Elliott Slessor (85) 5-4 Li Yuan (136)
Mark Williams (6) 5-1 Mike Dunn (79)

SFs
Yan (22) 6-2 Lyu (125)
Williams (6) 6-2 Slessor (85)

Final
Williams (6) 9-8 Yan (22)

That was a great sequence of tournaments for Jack Lisowski, as reflected in his ranking improvement, from 60 -> 52 -> 41 ->33 -> 26 over the four events. That's got to be one of the best consecutive runs for a lower-ranked player?

Edit: oh wait, 26 was his age after the fourth one. Even so, impressive run.

Well spotted, yes. He's been on fire!
26 was his age, but coincidentally also his ranking.
So from 60th on September 24th, to 26th just under two months later, on November 18th. Very impressive indeed.

Who will be number one at the end of the season? It will be very interesting indeed to see how it looks after this year's World Championship. I can't wait!
