Here's the latest graph of player ages over time, updated with the new, more accurate season average ages (hence the change to the x-axis). I think a very noticeable trend has emerged, it'll be interesting to see whether it continues.

This is brilliant, thanks Jim!

The trend is obvious, but are there signs that the chasing pack is starting to reduce in age?

2019 China Championship - Guangzhou Tianhe Sports Centre
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_China_Championship

In the second big money China event of the young season, Shaun Murphy proved his recent upturn in form was no fluke. He beat some of the tour's recently on form players: Yuan Sijun, Matthew Selt and Kurt Maflin. And then beat two top players, Mark Selby and Mark Williams, to take the title.

In the final, Murphy won 4 in a row from 5-5 to get within one frame of victory. Williams then won the next four though to force a decider. Murphy compiled a 69 in the final frame.

Hossein Vafaei beat Kyren Wilson among others to reach his third career semi-final

2019 UK Championship - Barbican Centre, York

Ding Junhui followed Shaun Murphy in coming out of something of a slump to win an event. His key victory was in beating defending champion Ronnie O'Sullivan in the last 16. He went on to face Stephen Maguire in the final, who himself was using this event as a return to form.
(Maguire thrashed Mark Allen 6-0 in the semi-final, compiling breaks of 95, 129, 72, 67, 50 and 100.)
The final four frames in the tournament all produced centuries. Maguire came back from 8-4 down to get to 8-6, but Ding closed out the final with breaks of 131 and 103.

Nigel Bond rolled back the years to reach the quarter-finals, beating Luca Brecel, Gary Wilson and Judd Trump.

2020 German Masters - Tempodrom, Berlin
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_German_Masters

Although there were a number of surprise results early on in the competition, leading to players such as Michael Georgiou and Elliott Slessor reaching the quarter-finals, the final was contested by two of the favourites, Judd Trump and Neil Robertson.

32 players qualified to play at the Tempodrom, meaning 4 wins in Germany were needed to reach the final. Robertson lost only two frames in those 4 matches (to Ian Burns and Shaun Murphy), but that form did not translate to the final, where Trump cemented his status as the game's top player with a 9-6 win.

The most surprising results in the early rounds were Jamie Clarke beating Mark Selby, amateur Ross Bulman knocking out Barry Hawkins, Robbie Williams beating John Higgins, and Jordan Brown defeating Dave Gilbert.

This was Peter Ebdon's final tournament. He announced his retirement after it while at 59th in our rankings.

Michael Holt reached the final for a second consecutive season and this time picked up his first ranking title, beating Zhou Yuelong in the final.

Perhaps surprisingly, the majority of pro players took part this year, including Ronni O'Sullivan and Mark Selby. Only 5 of the top 16 elected not to participate: Trump; Robertson; Higgins; Ding; Dott.
