It's a real travesty that young players like Sam Baird and Michael Wasley have to requalify for the tour and go back to zero points, while older players who performed at a consistently lower standard over the last two years, Jimmy White, Dave Harold, Nigel Bond et al keep their places and their points.

Scott Donaldson another victim. A promising 2013-14 finishing 49th on the official one-year money list but ending the season 65th, without a suspension or retirement elsewhere to save his points. Judging by his results in 2014-15 the obligation to rebuild his ranking points from zero put an end to his momentum and only in 2016-17, a second attempt to begin again, did he rediscover his 2013-14 level and indicate he would establish himself in the top 64. I wonder whether, if your ranking system had been in use, facing easier opposition in the opening round of a number of events would have helped him progress more quickly.

From your 'lucky survivors' list I think five, including both Marcus Campbell (officially 35th) and Jamie Cope (43rd), finished outside the official top 64 twelve months later. Interesting to see as you move forward whether that proves to be a trend.

And I cast my vote for continuing to show the number of points in your regular updates rather than ages.

2014 Australian Open - Bendigo Stadium
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Aust ... ields_Open

Judd Trump won his fourth ranking title, beating home favourite and World Number 1 Neil Robertson 9-5 in the final. It was a relatively low-scoring final between these two, looking at the 50+ break data:
Trump: 114, 101, 71, 55, 51, 50
Robertson: 109, 52

Xiao Guodong was perhaps an unexpected semi-finalist, but he was the 16th seed and went straight to the last 32 stage, and from there he only needed to beat the lower ranked Highfield, Ebdon and Stevens to get to the final four.

The most surprising results were Ebdon's win over Hawkins in the first round, and Jamie Jones' whitewashing of Stephen Maguire at the same stage.

Stuart Bingham won his second ranking title, thrashing Mark Allen in the final. Ballrun started strongly, going 4-0 up. Allen pulled it back to 5-3, but then lost the next 5 to lose 10-3. It was relatively low-scoring, with no century breaks made by either player.

Early favourites Robertson and O'Sullivan lost in the opening round, to Michael White and Alan McManus respectively.

I just followed Prop's link to Ryan Day's 147. Lovely to watch.

I think he was a touch lucky positionally on some of the earlier reds. And the final black was heart-in-mouth stuff. Memories of Ken Doherty!
His pack splits were superb though and worked out perfectly.

I went to the first day of this and watched an awful match between Stuart Bingham and Robbie Williams, and a barnstorming performance from Michael White as he whitewashed Aditya Mehta in double-quick time. The venue was out in the sticks, pretty far from the city, and my daughter was only 18 months old, so I didn't go to the weekday games after my work day finished, and the finals weekend was a bit out of my price range.
At the time, I thought I would have plenty more chances to go in the future, but alas this was to be the last year the event was held in Chengdu :-(

Ricky Walden won his third ranking title. It was a closely fought final with Mark Allen up to 7-7, but then Walden won the next three with breaks of 85, 103, and 54 and 62 to seal a 10-7 victory.

Zhao Xintong yet again won his wildcard match and then his first round match. This time beating Jamie Jones and Kurt Maflin. It's remarkable givent he results he has had that he has not turned professional yet.

Li Hang thrashed John Higgins 6-1 in the first round. The Wizard has had a very poor run of results of late and drops out of the top 16 following this tournament.

Number 1 Mark Selby and defending champion Ding Junhui both lost in qualifying, Selby to Oliver Lines and Ding to Wang Zepeng.
