Although he's 8 years younger than Bill Oliver, Bob Harris had a remarkably similar career, across the same timeline.
Another one who fell by the wayside in the early 90s.

Many of these 80s journeyman came from the ‘underground’ snooker scene of late nights in dodgy clubs; hustlers who made who-knows-how-much (cash in hand, don’t tell the taxman) out of all-night ‘money matches’ the length and breadth of the country, where large sums of money would change hands in dimly-lit, smoky rooms between local ‘businessmen’ ( often a euphemism for small-time crooks). These players knew their way around a table, and earned a living as best they could, with the fledgling pro’ game something of a closed shop in the 70s. We’ll never know how good they really were or could have been. Many of them born in the 40s or 50s who were just too early to take proper advantage of the boom years in the 80s and if they had clawed their way onto the circuit, as you say - the open era of the early 90s found them out. But delve a little deeper into these guys backgrounds and there are fascinating tales to be told.

it was a late night live music programme that used to be on bbc2. bit like a precursor to later with jools holland, but without an annoying hammer putting his plonky piano everywhere. one of the hosts was dj 'whispering' bob harris.

Only one of the best TV music programmes ever. Plenty of archive episodes out there on the internet; you could do worse…

There's Old Grey Whistle Test compilation programmes on TV occasionally. I saw a recent music video by a local band and the set was clearly based on the OGWT one. I wondered if the members of the band some of which would have been born in the early 00's would even know that.

Surprisingly low position for Barry West given that he made about as many TV appearances as the other 20 on the list put together. Was also a top-32 player on the official list for about half-a-dozen years during that period, whereas very few of the rest ever got into that bracket at any stage in their careers.

I was surprised by this too. I remember when inputting the scores that he was there or there abouts for a while.

Looking at his ranking timeline, it looks like he was in the chasing pack (ranked 17-48) from 1986-1990, but sometime in 1989, his form dropped off a cliff and he plummeted down the rankings fairly quickly from 1990 on.
These rankings are looking at the best 10 years of a players' career, so he just didn't sustain that promising form for long enough. He had a peak of about 5 years, but for the other 5 years under consideration he had poor results.

It seems Raziel played against Harris back in the day, according to his introductory post...

I did. I played him a couple of times. I never beat him, but the second match he only beat me 3-2.

I am not gay or anything but, back in the day, Bob Harris was a 'handsome chap'. He was quite tall, he always dressed well, and his teeth always seemed to be very white. He always had a couple of women with him. He was flash and a bit of a 'big head'. But, once you got to know him, he was OK. The 'flash' bit was really just a bit of an act. He never did me any harm, and I wish him well. :-)

EDIT: chengdufan, this is a great thread. It is bringing back all kinds of good memories for me. I also knew Bill Oliver. He used to own the Pot Black snooker club in Plymouth, Devon. I think he sold the snooker club and now runs a pub in Plymouth somewhere.
