Re: All-time ranking list

Jackie Rea - the Clown Prince of Belfast. Won the prestigious News of the World £500 tournament at Leicester Square in, around 1953. Was also runner up to John Pulman in the 1957 World Championship “Matchplay”, although the game had hit rock bottom and there were only 4 entrants. During the late 50’s/60’s depression, Rea, a former WWII Royal Navy Commando, soldiered on and became popular for his brilliant exhibitions, which he turned into a one-man snooker comedy show, with trick shots and Irish gags - long before Dennis Taylor! He still played on the pro circuit into old age, 68/69.

No worries brother. Jackie Rea was a distinguished War hero. Have you read about his other exploits, like saving the lives of two girls in Guernsey? A remarkable man.

I have not  but if you wish to elaborate, I’m all ears (not literally, that would be grotesque)

Judging by his recent antics I’d suggest Alex Higgins.

Oh, that's right. I'd already forgotten about the incident with Xiao Guodong. Did they ever finish the investigation they promised into that?

Super read that! Thanks for sharing. The handicapping referenced as being used in the 50s is interesting. I wonder how they fixed that up.

The committee (Joe Davis, another of the directors of Leicester Square Hall whose name escapes me, and a representative from the News of the World) would meet at the start of the tournament to set the handicaps. Joe was always the back marker on scratch. Sometimes Fred, as World Champion, would also play off scratch or 7 (one black). The handicaps then ranged to anything up to 28 points a frame. When Rea and Alec Brown won it they had quite generous handicaps.

Actually MJ-A had winning head-to-head records against Steve Davis, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Williams, John Parrott and Cliff Thorburn, as well as famously winning all three of his matches against Hendry.

A very talented player, he should have been higher up this list and achieved more in general - it was a consistent failure to beat those around or below him that held him back, such as the ‘91 European Open final against Tony Jones - a decent but unremarkable player who Mark was expected to defeat comfortably. When he went into matches as favourite, he invariably imploded. By his own admission, when going in as the underdog he felt no pressure, and was often able to perform to his true ability and pick up ‘surprising’ results.

He was a good commentator too, providing that service to Sky Sports for many years.

Re: All-time ranking list

He should’ve given Tony Jones a bit more credit - got what he deserved. Jones had been a decent fringe player for a few years having won the English Amateur in 1983, beating Neal Foulds in the Southern Section final, followed by John Parrott in the grand final, 13-9. He was perhaps best known for partnering Ray Reardon to the final of the Hofmeister World Doubles in 1985.
