Q School Veteran Watch

Postby badtemperedcyril

Q School always throws up a few names from yesteryear and the current edition is no exception. I don’t know the level some of them are playing at now? Do they enter with a serious intention of winning tour cards or is it just a bit of fun?

A quick browse of the QS1 draw…

Dean Reynolds - former World No.8 (age 59)
Rod “the plod” Lawler - former World No.20 (age 50)
Ian Brumby - former pro and Merseyside champion (age 57)
Simon Bedford - former Crucible qualifier (age 46)
Tony Knowles - former World No.2 (age 66)
Leo Fernandez - former English Amateur Champion (age 45)

There’s also some notable veterans trying to make a swift return to the tour having just dropped off, like Michael Holt, Fergal O’Brien, Rory McLeod, Lee Walker, Kurt Maflin, Michael Georgiou.

The guys in the second category will all have a great chance of making it through because they know the conditions so well and are still match sharp. Difficult for inexperienced young lads to compete with their craft and tactical know how.

Kinda would prefer to see a swathe of 16-20 year olds make it through but it’s tough going.

17 players over 50. TK the only one in his 60s. Sadly no Dessie Sheehan this year.

Gary Miller making his Q School debut aged 57

Be interesting to see the Q School entrants by age. One would expect it to me made up primarily of young lads hoping to embark on a career in the game but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Wow! Excellent work, Chengdufan.

Actually a lot more U21’s than I was expecting. Perhaps it’s not as bad as many would have us believe. It’ll be interesting to see the ages of the 12 tour card winners. I recall last year they were mostly seasoned, battle hardened, journeymen returning.

Yes let's hope so.

I don't mean to be a purveyor of bad news but just going through this list of qualifiers since the q school started in 2011 there isn't many surprise names that have emerged since then.

Disgraceful. I know they’re from the 80s but that sort of thing just isn’t acceptable anymore :grrr:

I hope they sober up for Q2.

It was also Lewis Ullah's first Q School win in his tenth match. He's only 20 though, to be fair.

Doesn't bode well for him though if he's barely beating TK.

he should have got at least 1 world championship by the age of 20. He must be in decline.

The future of snooker is bright. All three are still on course.

Rory and Fergal face each other tomorrow, so one 50+ years old player is guaranteed to return on the Tour.

Lucky they didn’t have AST in Dean’s day! Remember him being warned by John Williams at the Crucible.

And yet, they’re the first to complete their opening frame! 1-0 Rory

I think even Rory can play as fast as Ronnie against Dean. Currently 20 secs a shot for Rory. 35 for Dean
