2023 Champion of Champions Qualification

Postby Minimum Break

I know in the past there has been a list to determine who will be invited to the Champion of Champions should more than 16 players qualify, To my knowledge that has not been needed in the past, but it may well this year with 10 players already 'Qualified' and possibly 11 places still available.

I also cannot find the list relevant to this year's event, so I have taken the most recent one I can find (2020) and tried to match up as well as I can to the current list of players to see who may be in line to miss out. I have assumed the Hong Kong Masters will be held again and the rumoured Shanghai Masters.

The full list from that event can be found below. Of note is that all 3 of the Championship Leagues that year were ahead of the Home Nations (not that it really matters if an event is in the Top 16 listed), and the World Championship Runner-up was ahead of the Shoot-Out Winner.

If we do get more than 16 winners then the winners of tournaments such as championship league, shoot out shouldn't be rewarded a spot. Imagine if the Shanghai Masters goes ahead and we already have 16 winners up to that point and the winner is someone else which makes it 17 different winners but the player that won the Shoot Out and championship league get in ahead of them <doh>

That order I've done is pure conjecture of course. And it's still pretty unlikely there will be more than 16 players who qualify from that list.

If there is, for sure the Championship Leagues and Shoot-Out belong last in that list.

I prefer it when they do it this way, and not just award it on rank.

I do remember in 2019 Barry Hawkins won the Paul Hunter classic (yes minor event) but the world senior champion and woman's world champion were selected ahead of him. I never understood that.

Eh, World Champion > PHC Champion.

Also wasn’t that when Jimmy and Reanne won? Seems pretty easy to understand.

probably because it was an independent promoter who ran it, not part of the wpbsa/wst/matchroom cabal.

Yeah Shanghai should be ahead of those two. I think at the bottom of the list it should go:
Championship league (inv)
Shoot out
6 reds

The 2023 English Open should be integrated into the list of qualifying events as it will be held during October.

The 2023 World Championship Seniors and Women events should also feature on the list although there may prove to be 16 champions prioritised ahead of them at the cut-off date.

should the previous winner of the CoC get a place?

It should really be champions of the year not last year. Although maybe because its the only chance RoS will be there

I always think the defending champion should always be in.

It's a big tick from me.

Updated list according to the Provisional calendar for next season.

As the International Championship finishes the day before the Champ of Champs starts, I'm not sure whether it will be a Qualifier for this year or next.

Might as well, I suppose.

Especially as half the time they top it up with the highest ranking players anyway.

This tournament is an excellent idea in theory, but a bit of a shambles in reality.

Of course last year’s champ should get to defend their title - it’s a no-brainer

maybe they should have a champion of runners up competition where only the loosing finalists qualify.

Trade descriptions act need to investigate. Champion of Champions when half aren't even champions.

They should probably look into UEFA’s ‘champions’ league first…
