Raymond Fry won
Not exactly young at 37 and was born the second day of the 1984 World Championship when Tony Knowles was World no 4 and lost that year in the 1st round to debutant John Parrott

A couple of minor surprises this morning: Brown beating Castle and Harvey beating Lam. It's pleasing to see the matches being finished in decent time.

Well yes, that's one reason why I mentioned it now! In this morning's sessiom, there was only really one player in the category of 'old grinder'. There are a few more coming up...

It has to be said if Gary Challis v Hamim Hussain had gone the distance it could have been very long

castle was very forgettable in his crucible qualifier vs tian pengfei , another one for the ' addiction and identity ' i suppose.

Oh no, not at all!
Billy-Joe Castle is a real contender, and aged 28 he can reasonably expect to have a future in the game. He's had a bad season and dropped off the tour, but that's not a complete surprise given the circumstances of the last 15 months.
Oliver Brown is a fine player, but as an amateur he's had far less chance to play. So it's a good result for him against expectation.

So it's the quarter-finals and we're down to 32 players.
Interestingly, the average age of the remaining players is the same as the average age of the field at the start of the competition, 30.
We have 5 teenagers remaining, with Lei Peifan being the youngest at 18. And 5 players over 40. 51 year-old Peter Lines is the oldest.
7 of last year's professionals are already out, but 14 remain.
We have 7 former pros and 11 who have not been on tour.
Only 4 players have a Q School win record below 50%, with Lee Shanker the worst at 29%.
Of those who've played more than 10 Q School matches, 4 have a win record over 80%, with Rod Lawler's 85% the best.

Was a good win for Lei Peifan on his 18th birthday. He has an outside chance tomorrow, although Cahill is favourite. Bai Langning is unproven yet.

So through to the semi-finals are 11 players who were on tour last season, 2 other former pros, and 3 who have never been professional. Those three are Sean Harvey (aged 36), Lee Shanker (33), and Oliver Brown (26). It's not surprising given the lack of practice opportunity for the amateurs, and given the seeded draw this year.
Harvey has played on tv before. I remember watching him win a match or get close to beating a pro a couple of years ago.
Brown has played in numerous ranking events and has regularly won matches, so I'm not surprised to see him at this stage. He is arguably the best player over 25 who has never been a professional.
Shanker is a massive surprise to see at this stage. Prior to this year he had won only 3 of 18 Q School matches. Last year he lost all his first round games. Well played to him for the improvement!

Sean Harvey despite being 36 has very little experience at this level having played Q School for the 1st time last year

SPOT 3 Final
Michael Georgiou v Jackson Page
Georgiou first turned pro in 2008 and has spend 7 season on tour without making much of an impact it must be said winning the Shoot Out aside Best performance 2020 German Open Quarter Finals losing to eventual Champion Judd Trump.
Jackson Page after his rookie 2 seasons winning 19 matches hes looking to bounce right back today
