Improving the German Masters and World Open

Postby gninnur karona

The draws for these two competitions seed the top 64 based on the same ranking list.

The result as stands is that every player seeded from 1 to 64 will face the same opponent in the last 64 of both competitions if those seeded players reach that stage (the top 32 are assured of their places in the German Masters last 64).

One straightforward change would reduce the number of these potential clashes to zero.

Swap the matches in the second of these competitions involving seeds 3 & 4, 7 & 8, 11 & 12, and so on to 55 & 56, 59 & 60, and 63 & 64.

Effectively this would result in the odd-numbered seeds occupying the top half of the draw and the even-numbered seeds being placed in the bottom half. The last 64 round would see 31 v 33 and 32 v 34 rather than 32 v 33 and 31 v 34. Furthermore this cascades into subsequent rounds so that there would be no double confrontation in the two competitions between top 64 players in all rounds before the final providing that the results conform to the seedings.

Simple to implement.

If only WST cared.
