World Championship wooden spoonists

Postby Pink Ball

The unofficial worst player of each championship. The player who loses in the first round to a player who loses in the second round to a player who loses in the quarter-final to a player who loses in the semi-final to a player who loses the final.

Based on the current format which has been in place since 1982.

Roll of "honour"
2018: ????????
2017: Judd Trump (England)
2016: Robbie Williams (England)
2015: Alan McManus (Scotland)
2014: Ding Junhui (China)
2013: Stephen Maguire (Scotland)
2012: Liang Wenbo (China)
2011: Joe Perry (England)
2010: Marcus Campbell (Scotland)
2009: Rory McLeod (England)
2008: Nigel Bond (England)
2007: Ken Doherty (REPUBLIC OF IRELAND)
2006: Joe Swail (Northern IRELAND)
2005: Barry Pinches (England)
2004: Dominic Dale (Wales)
2003: Joe Swail (Northern IRELAND)
2002: Paul Hunter (England)
2001: David Roe (England)
2000: Ronnie O'Sullivan (England)
1999: Jimmy White (England)
1998: James Wattana (Thailand)
1997: Jimmy White (England)
1996: Mick Price (England)
1995: Ken Doherty (REPUBLIC OF IRELAND)
1994: Dennis Taylor (Northern IRELAND)

The only multiple "champions" are Ken Doherty (1995 & 2007); Joe Swail (2003 & 2006); Jimmy White (1997 & 1999).

No player has "defended" the "title".

Nationality breakdown:
England (19); Scotland (3); Northern IRELAND (3); Wales (3); China (2); REPUBLIC OF IRELAND (2); Malta (1); Thailand (1); Australia (1); & South Africa (1).

It has been "won" five times by players who have also won the World Championship: Ray Reardon (1986), Ronnie O'Sullivan (2000), Ken Doherty (1995 & 2007), & Dennis Taylor (1994).

Have you got the breakdown of when it has carried on through the qualifiers? For this to happen it must be a qualifier who wins The Crucible element of it.

? Steve Davis lost 10-1 to TOny Knowles when defending his first title. Wooden spoon.

I blame Pink Ball for that for only going back as far as 1983 :john:

Dave Martin "won" it in 1982.

I got one eye on Marco Fu to win this.

15 players still "in". Mark Allen's win over Joe Perry means Liam Highfield is out. Mark Selby is the first man "through" to the quarter-finals.

Day, Wakelin, Un-Nooh, Neil Robertson, Jimmy Robertson, Selby, Fu, Maguire, Guodong, Murphy, Stevens, Carrington, Dott, Brecel, Bingham.

This is the sort of analysis you don't get on the BBC.

This is a dream quarter final line up developing. We can expect sell out crowds.

Wimbledon used to have a 'Plate' competition for all the players who lost in the opening round. Not everyone entered but one year a very high seed who lost in the first round bothered to enter and won the competition at a canter.
