Yeah, that's kind of my feeling. Not slagging off the format, we need more long match tournaments. But I'm not sure it tops even a bastardised UK Championships just yet. Just due to the fact that there's a lot more people involved, and a lot more matches.
Though technically The Masters is pushed as a major too.

The Tour Championship does have 128 players.

even more technichally, as amateurs who get enough points from top-ups could qualify (much to murphy's chagrin i'm sure).
according to snooker.org there were 165 in total this season!

Technically, I suppose. But only if you count the rest of the season as part of the tournament.
