Old Articles

The website for the Independent newspaper has loads of old articles from as far back as the early 90's. There's some interesting ones about Snooker.

The potential problems facing Snooker in the future if TV loses interest. Features Barry Hearn who mentions the decline of darts. The writer wasn't far wrong as it was written during the World Matchplay, a tournament that would never be held again after ITV dropped their Snooker coverage.

Already at the time in 92 they are saying Ronnie would be the next Hendry... put lots of pressure on him from the off.

Reminds me nowadays when some top players say things similar.

I think I read one of those BBC articles on ceefax. I wasn't paying much attention to Snooker at the time so I didn't realise it was such a big deal.

That article is from the first edition after the name change from Cork Examiner to just the Examiner.

Seriously? Fuckin' hell. Did they just call it 'The Examiner' initially, or was it from Cork Examiner to Irish Examiner?

It was the Examiner for four years and then became the Irish Examiner in 2000. I have the Irish Newspaper Archive and was flicking through old covers which is where I found this. I don't think I've ever read a physical copy of the paper but I imagine it probably is better than the others.

You're Cavan, right? Would you get the Examiner up there? Still quite Munster-centric, but it's very good.
