The General Cup is a invitational event that is not part of the WPBSA Main tour but it attracts a good field of players These Days But when it was first staged in 2004 Dominic Dale and Gary Wilson playing on the main tour for the first time was the only Pro player in the draw Dominic Dale reached the final where he lost 6-3 to Issara Kachaiwong.

But in that inaugral event were players that would go on to play on the Pro Tour Mark Allen, Pankaj Advani, Aditya Mehta and Atthasit Mahitthi from Thailand.

The event was not held then until 2009 when Ricky Walden claimed the Title beating Liang Wenbo 6-2 in the Final.

2004 Issara Kachaiwong Beat Dominic Dale 6-3
2009 Ricky Walden Beat Liang Wenbo 6-2
2011 Stephen Lee Beat Ricky Walden 7-6

in the 80s these types of events organized by Barry Hearn for mainly Matchroom players were all the rage and yes they counted.

Have booked the week off work for this. Going to watch and record every match then watch them again until the next games start. I have scheduled my whole life around this massive tournament.

Maybe I'm getting mixed up with a different event, but I'm pretty sure it was this.

Selby won the Wuxi classic when it was a invitational.
