Where are the juniors?

Postby Tim Dunkley

CAN it really be true that the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Berkshire, Surrey, Essex, Sussex and Kent cannot muster one entry between them for this year’s English Under-14 Championship and English Under-16 Championship?

And what is happening in the Midlands? Two entries for the Under-14s!

We have done so much good work in the south over the past few years to close the gap to the north. What is it that is stopping players from entering? Are their coaches or parents holding them back? Are they just not aware of these events? It baffles me.

This season’s Under-14 southern qualifiers will be hosted by Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon, on Saturday, November 10. The Under-16s is at the same club the following day.

Both events will use a round-robin format, best-of-three in the Under-14s and best-of-five in the Under-16s.

Under-14 entry fee is £15 for EASB members £25 for non-members. Closing date is November 3.

Under-16 entry fee is £20 for EASB members £30 for non-members. Closing date is November 4.

Very worrying indeed.

I wrote this back in Sept 2014, after the announcements of the Riley's closures...

I think Barry / World Snooker / WPBSA should do something with these empty ready-made clubs. I feel that Barry has done a pretty brilliant job with professional game but it teeters on very shaky amateur foundations right now, in the UK at least.

I was playing tonight in my club the Hurricane Rooms in Kings Cross, London - every table full and peeps queuing for tables, on a Monday night.

Neal Foulds is with me!! :)

@Dan_Cat @snookerbacker @BarryHearn Who knows? Maybe BH will do that. Almost all old Lucania clubs were above Burtons Tailors. #memories

Think his dad is putting him under a lot of pressure.

brought him in to our club to play some of the better players and was not impressed when he got trounced.

Felt sorry for the lad.

Having 'snooker playing sensation' in your twitter bio is very strong words to live up to. Did you play him?

No I didn't but a fella I play regularly played him. He is a regular 70/80 break player and he whitewashed the lad. Fair enough I suppose as he is only young but he seemed to have a very poor attitude and started looking at his phone instead of spotting balls when he was losing.
