I've counted 15 current (i.e. 2021-22) professionals, and there are also several ex-pros and some very promising juniors who may make it to the pro ranks in the future. Basically, it's almost all of the best players currently in China, except missing Ding Junhui of course. SnookerIsland favourite Yan Bingtao is not there (he's actually stayed in England again), but his father coaches the Zibo team.

There are several incredibly strong first round clashes, including Shaanxi vs. Huizhou. The players on view are: Zhao Xintong, Li Hang, Fan Zhengyi, Liang Wenbo, Xiao Guodong abd Zhang Yong. The match takes place at 6am on Monday!

My mistake, the event actually runs from 5th June, for 5 days. The schedule is:
5th June
14:00: E1-E4、E2-E3、F2-F5、F3-F4、G2-G5、G3-G4、H2-H5、H3-H4
19:30: A1-A4、A2-A3、B1-B4、B2-B3、C1-C4、C2-C3、D1-D4、D2-D3

6th June
10:00: F1-F5、F2-F3、G1-G5、G2-G3、H1-H5、H2-H3
14:00: A1-A3、A2-A4、B1-B3、B2-B4、C1-C3、C2-C4、D1-D3、D2-D4
19:30: E1-E3、E2-E4、F1-F4、F3-F5、G1-G4、G3-G5、H1-H4、H3-H5

7th June
10:00: E1-E2、E3-E4、F1-F3、F2-F4、G1-G3、G2-G4、H1-H3、H2-H4
14:00: A1-A2、A3-A4、B1-B2、B3-B4、C1-C2、C3-C4、D1-D2、D3-D4
19:30: F1-F2、F4-F5、G1-G2、G4-G5、H1-H2、H4-H5

Then 8-9th are the knockouts.

Thanks for sharing this Lewis. I will be supporting Chongqing though it's a shame the best player at my club, Li Li is not playing.
I wonder who Barry Vesty is. :chin:

The teams are franchises. They aren't necessarily locally affiliated. Barry Vesty has lived in China for years.

Tournament has started already! I was wrong about the start date

Guangdong 2-3 Beijing
Dongguan 5-0 Zhejiang
Wuxi 2-3 Zibo

Day 2 saw a couple of turnarounds involving some of the strong teams.

The hosts, Shaanxi came from behind to beat Anhui 3-2. Fan Zhengyi got a characteristic 99 to level 2-2, and then Zhao Xintong got 50 in the decider.

Zhang Anda and Cao Yupeng got a 110 break in the Scotch doubles, during Suzhou's 5-0 win against Chongqing. Then they played against another strong team, Lanzhou. Lyu Haotian and Xu Si won the first 2 singles frames for Lanzhou, but then Zhang Anda & Cao Yupeng won the doubles for Suzhou, and finally Mei Xiwen and Cao Yupeng won their singles to win the match 3-2.

Shanghai recorded two 5-0 wins, with Lu Ning, Tian Pengfei and Zhao Jianbo all getting decent breaks.

These are franchises, the players aren't affiliated to a province - they get paid by a sponsor.

But I have suggested the CBSA hold an Inter-Provincial tournament. China has 34 'provinces', but that includes Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. They could easily have provincial tournaments which qualify for a 32-player draw. It could become the largest competition in the world, in any sport. Surprisingly, most of the provinces have produced at least one professional player - the talent is very evenly divided across China.

This China City teams competition seems very popular, even though each player only gets 2 frames per match in the group phase. The knockout rounds are a bit longer, but not much. The standard can be pretty high: there have been 147's by Lyu Haotian and He Guoqiang in this competition in the last few years.

In the last-16 round, Henan produced a great comeback against the strong Huizhou team comprising Liang Wenbo, Xiao Guodong and Zhang Yong. From 0-3 behind, Henan won 4-3. Apart from that, the other strong teams safely progressed.

L16 Results:
Dongguan 4-1 Mianyang
Lanzhou 4-3 Tibet
Shaanxi 4-0 Guizhou
Dongguan Youth 0-4 Shanghai
Henan 4-3 Huizhou
Foshan 4-1 Pengzhou
Sichaun 4-2 Zhongshan
Zibo 0-4 Suzhou

In the evening session, the Q-finals were played. The most exciting match appeared to be hosts Shaanxi (Zhao Xintong, Li Hang and Fan Zhengyi) against Shanghai (Lu Ning, Tian Pengfei and Zhao Jianbo). But in just 80 minutes, Shanghai won 4-0. Then Lyu Haotian's 101 break helped Lanzhou's three professionals beat the Academy team Dongguan.

The best match was Sichuan (Zhou Yuelong, Zhang Jiankang and Cai Wei) against Suzhou (Zhang Anda, Cao Yupeng and Mei Xiwen). In a tense final frame, Zhang Jiankang beat Cao Yupeng to eliminate the favourites.

Q-final Results:
Dongguan 2-4 Lanzhou
Shaanxi 0-4 Shanghai
Henan 2-4 Foshan
Sichaun 4-3 Suzhou

Today the tournament reached its conclusion, with the last two rounds, still best-of-7.

In the first semi-final, Shanghai won a very tense match against Lanzhou, with all 6 players current professionals. Ultimately Zhao Jianbo potted the final pink to secure the match 4-3. The second semi-final saw Sichuan beat Foshan 4-1.

The final started with two close frames. Zhang Jiankang beat Lu Ning on the final black, and then Zhao Jianbo beat Zhou Yuelong with the aid of a free ball, to level 1-1. This became 2-2 after Tian/Zhao beat Zhang/Cai in the doubles, and then Zhou Yuelong beat Tian Pengfei in two one-sided frames. In a critical 6th frame, Lu Ning outplayed Cai Wei, to give Shanghai a 3-2 lead, and this proved decisive when they won the following doubles frame to take the match 4-2. Their prize was 150000RMB (£16500).

In the knockout stages, there were centuries by Cao Yupeng (140), Mei Xiwen (127), Lyu Haotian (101) and Lu Ning (101), bringing the total to 8.

Semi-finals:
Shanghai 4-3 Lanzhou
Sichaun 4-1 Foshan

Final:
Shanghai 4-2 Sichuan

The next CBSA tournament takes place directly after this one, June 10-12, at the same location. This time, it's a singles knockout. Matches until L16 are best-of-5, then best-of-7 from L16 to final, which is best-of-9.

They have 8 tables in Xi'an, so they are probably expecting a large entry. There were 105 players competing in the City teams event just finished, so many of them (especially the successful ones) will have stayed on. I reckon they probably have a capacity of 70 for a 3-day event. The registration was open right up until the draw, which took place today. No news yet, but nodoubt it will surface soon.
